Civil engineering is one of the oldest types of engineering and has been practiced for thousands of years. Today, civil engineering encompasses buildings, such as apartment buildings, schools, and hospitals, and other important constructions, including roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, airports, railroads, railway stations, and water supply and sewage systems.

Civil engineering companies can operate in either the public or private sector. Those in the public sector are owned and operated by local (municipal, city, state) governments or the federal government. Companies in the private sector can range from small entrepreneurs to multinational development corporations.

Due to the rise of various environmental and climate issues, civil engineering is shifting toward environmentally friendly solutions. Therefore, many academic departments have changed their names from civil engineering to civil and environmental engineering.
