Recently, a green hydrogen project was announced in Saudi Arabia. The $5-billion plant represents a joint venture between US industrial gas company, Air Products & Chemicals and Neom. The latter is a mega-city currently being planned on the border of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Egypt.
Powered by solar and wind totaling four gigawatts, the facility will have daily green hydrogen output of 650 tons. This is described by Air Products as enough to operate 20,000 hydrogen-fueled buses.
The CEO of the company also described confidence in low-carbon transport fuel’s future viability as a non-subsidized technology. At present, green hydrogen is not cost-competitive with gray hydrogen, which has natural gas as its feedstock. What is necessary to make it competitive in the long term is a combination of high rates of electrolyzer utilization and low power prices.
